Filtration
The primary function of a cigarette filter is to trap particulate matter from the smoke before it reaches the smoker. Cellulose acetate fibers trap particles through impaction, interception and diffusion as smoke passes through the fibrous matrix of the filter rod. The efficiency of this filtration is affected by fiber density, filter length and the presence of additional filtration elements such as charcoal.
Draw Resistance
Draw resistance, sometimes called pressure drop, is the resistance a smoker feels when pulling air through a cigarette. It is measured in millimeters of water column. A typical commercial cigarette has a draw resistance in the range of 80 to 120 mm WG. Filters with higher fiber density produce a tighter draw. Filters with lower fiber density produce a more open draw. Getting draw resistance right for the target market and consumer segment is one of the most important quality control parameters in cigarette manufacturing.
Smoke Cooling and Flavor Modification
As smoke travels through the filter it cools slightly before reaching the smoker. Longer filters and recessed filter constructions produce more cooling. Standard cellulose acetate filters have minimal effect on flavor character. Charcoal filters actively remove certain gas-phase compounds producing a perceptibly cleaner and less harsh smoke. Capsule filters release flavor directly into the smoke when activated.
How a Cigarette Filter is Made
The raw material for most commercial cigarette filters is cellulose acetate tow, which is a bundle of continuous filaments derived from wood pulp processed with acetic acid. The tow arrives at the manufacturing facility in compressed bales and is opened before processing.
The opened tow passes through a series of stages that gather, crimp and compact the fibers into a cylindrical rod of controlled density. A plasticizer, typically triacetin, is applied to bond fiber intersections and give the filter rod structural integrity. The compacted fiber is then wrapped in plug wrap paper that holds the cylindrical shape and contributes to draw resistance.
The continuous filter rod is cut into individual filter rods of specified length and transferred to the cigarette making machine where they are combined with tobacco rods and wrapped in tipping paper to produce the finished cigarette.
Cigarette Filter Types
Standard Cellulose Acetate Filter
The standard cellulose acetate filter is the foundation of commercial cigarette manufacturing globally. It has been the industry standard since the 1950s and is used in the majority of cigarettes produced worldwide.
Construction: Single section of cellulose acetate tow, gathered, crimped and compacted into a cylindrical rod, wrapped in plug wrap paper.
Diameter options:
8mm for standard format
6mm for slim format
4.5mm for super slim format
Standard filter lengths are 15mm, 20mm, 25mm and 27mm. Longer filters produce more filtration and cooling but require a shorter tobacco rod in a cigarette of fixed overall length.
Smoking experience: Clean, familiar draw that does not significantly alter the flavor character of the tobacco blend.
Best suited for mainstream and value cigarette brands across all markets. First-time private label launches where simplicity and production consistency are priorities.
Charcoal Filter
The charcoal filter adds an activated charcoal segment to the standard cellulose acetate construction. It is one of the most commercially significant filter developments in cigarette manufacturing history.
Construction: Two-section filter combining an outer cellulose acetate section and an inner granular activated charcoal segment. The charcoal segment sits between the acetate section and the tobacco rod, held within an enclosure that prevents carbon granules from migrating into the tobacco or reaching the smoker’s mouth.
How it works: Activated charcoal has an extremely high internal surface area per unit weight. As smoke passes through, certain gas-phase compounds adsorb onto this surface and are removed from the smoke before it reaches the smoker.
Smoking experience: Noticeably cleaner and less harsh than a standard acetate filter at the same tobacco fill. The tobacco character is preserved but some of the rougher elements of the smoke are removed. Smokers typically describe charcoal filter cigarettes as smoother without being lighter.
Best suited for premium and mid-range cigarette brands where the product experience justifies the added production cost. Also suited for markets where competitors use charcoal filters and the absence of one would be a commercial disadvantage.
Recessed Filter
The recessed filter positions the filter material slightly back from the tip of the cigarette, creating a small empty air cavity at the smoking end.
Construction: Standard cellulose acetate filter rod set back from the tipping paper end by 2mm to 4mm. The air cavity is formed by the tipping paper extending beyond the end of the filter rod and remaining open.
How it works: When the smoker draws on the cigarette, ambient air enters through the open tip, mixes with smoke from the filter in the cavity and the diluted mixture is delivered to the smoker. This air mixing produces a cooler and softer draw than a flush filter.
Smoking experience: Cooler and more aerated than a standard flush filter. The recessed tip also gives the cigarette a distinctive visual appearance associated with premium and traditional product positioning in many markets.
Best suited for premium and upper-mainstream brands. Particularly relevant for Middle Eastern and European markets where recessed filter cigarettes have strong consumer recognition and quality association.
Capsule Filter
The capsule filter contains a small liquid-filled capsule inside the filter rod that the smoker can activate by squeezing.
Construction: Standard cellulose acetate filter rod with a small capsule, typically 3mm to 4mm in diameter, embedded within the acetate during filter rod formation. The capsule contains a liquid flavoring, most commonly menthol. When squeezed, the capsule ruptures and releases the flavoring into the surrounding acetate, from which it vaporizes into the smoke.
Smoking experience: Before activation the cigarette smokes as a standard product. After activation the released flavoring delivers a distinct cooling or flavoring effect. The smoker can choose to activate at any point during smoking or not at all.
Market significance: Capsule filter cigarettes have achieved very strong commercial traction across Asia and Latin America. Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines all have significant capsule cigarette volumes. The element of choice is the primary driver of consumer appeal.
Best suited for brands targeting younger adult demographics and Asian and Latin American markets where capsule cigarettes are commercially established.
Production note: Capsule filter production requires specialized filter making equipment. Not all manufacturers have this capability.
Slim and Super Slim Filters
Slim and super slim filters are standard cellulose acetate filters produced at narrower diameters to match slim and super slim cigarette formats.
Diameter specifications:
Standard is 8mm
Slim is 6mm
Super Slim is 4.5mm
The filter diameter must match the cigarette format diameter precisely. A super slim cigarette cannot use a standard 8mm filter because the dimensions are physically incompatible. This is a specification detail that brand owners sometimes underestimate when first specifying a slim format product.
Narrower filters at the same fiber density produce lower absolute draw resistance. Fiber density is adjusted in slim and super slim production to achieve draw resistance values comparable to standard format cigarettes.
Smoking experience: The narrower format burns differently. It feels lighter and more refined and produces lower smoke volume per draw. This is precisely why slim and super slim formats are commercially associated with premium and female-oriented brand positioning.

Ventilated Filters
Ventilated filters have small laser-perforated holes in the tipping paper at the filter end, allowing ambient air to mix with smoke during smoking.
How it works: The perforations create controlled air entry points around the circumference of the tipping paper. When the smoker draws, air enters through these perforations and mixes with smoke in the filter, diluting it and reducing the concentration of smoke compounds per draw. Ventilation level is expressed as a percentage and is controlled by the number and size of perforations.
Important note: Ventilation level must be carefully matched to the tobacco fill and filter density of the specific product. A heavily ventilated filter on a tobacco fill designed for a full-bodied product creates a mismatch between what the packaging communicates and what the smoker actually experiences.
Best suited for light and ultra-light brand positioning and markets where regulatory frameworks require specific delivery level compliance.
Dual and Triple Filters
Dual and triple filters combine multiple filtration elements in a single filter rod.
A dual filter has two segments, typically outer cellulose acetate and inner charcoal, combined in a single rod.
